Former Editor SURFER Magazine

“John Bilderback is a rarity among that exclusive club of world-class surf photographers in that he’s also a very funny writer. The photos in this book are luscious and harrowing and wide-ranging, but JB’s crazy stories might be the best part.

Excerpts

The Silly String

“I mean this is a man you just don’t cross. And you most certainly don’t provoke. But there it was. Looking at me. And the longer he cracked himself up teasing me the more tempted I got. And then… You know that feeling when you just throw yourself over the ledge of a wave that you know you have absolutely no chance of making? It was that…”

Kauai, why?

“I’d already been warned about this once. I previously went to Kauai with Ronnie Burns, and Mike Latronic. A ledgey right was firing right off the plane, and we hit it. I whipped out my tripod and big black Century 650 lens and one of the broadest Hawaiian chests I’d ever seen appeared from between two cars. It was Alekai Kinimaka.

“Eh braddah we appreciate you put your camera away.”

He said it very nicely. He certainly did not need in any way to sound intimidating. He knew what he looked like.”

The Tuamotu Crossing

“We reached our friend’s pearl farm a little before dinner time and we met ‘Tamaro’ their pet shark. He had come for dinner as well.

The shark would come to the beach into the shallow water by their house, and grandma would lay a good sized fish on the sharks head, and cut it into pieces for him. Then by hand she would feed him the pieces, scratch his back and he would swim away, returning the next day for breakfast. Apparently this family had been in harmony with this shark for decades.”

Hokulea – A Voyage of Hope

From the launch in Hawai’i in May 2014, around the world 60,000 miles, to 23 different countries, this beautiful hardcover book chronicles Hokule’a’s epic mission to raise awareness of and nurture worldwide sustainability. Interwoven with descriptions of Hokule’a’s experiences in port are the voices of the master navigators and crew members, who guide the ship along the ocean’s trackless path using only stars, birds, wind, and seas — non-instrumental wayfinding techniques– and the local pioneers — scientists, teachers, and children touched by Hokule’a’ — who work tirelessly to weather the many environmental challenges in our modern lives. This is a story about our need to draw together into one global community. By respecting one another and nature’s delicate and intricate systems, this book captures the many ways indigenous cultures are committed to living in ecological balance.

MALAMA HONUA – Hokulea A Voyage of Hope

“This book is a delight in every way. It is lavishly produced, and beautifully written. Its thoughtful, artful photography chronicles Hokule’a’s world-wide journey with one or more stunning images on nearly every page. It clearly articulates the most critical challenges of our time, and carries a message of authentic hope.

The size, feel, weight, and even the magical endpapers all add to the luscious presentation of this important, timely and captivating book.”

“I love this book. Words and images weave to tell the story of an amazing journey. My husband and I were recently visiting the Big Island, and the canoe was docked at our hotel in Hilo. School children would arrive each morning with offerings and song for the crew members gathered. It was wonderful to witness. Once home, I ordered this book to learn more. So glad I did. In what can be a crazy world, this warmed my heart and soul.”
